A little bit of hystory: "The Olympic Games"
INTERESTING FACTS ABOUT THE OLYMPIC GAMES
* Read the following statements about the Olympic Games and say if they are TRUE or FALSE:
1-The early Olympic Games were celebrated as a religious festival (they celebrated the Greek god Zeus) from 776 B.C. until 393 A.D.
2-Then the games were prohibited for being a pagan festival.
3-Initially, the Olympic Games lasted only one day.
4-The ancient Games included running, swimming, long jump, shot put, javelin, boxing, pankration and equestrian events.
5-Pankration was a combination of wrestling and boxing, and was considered to be one of the toughest sports.
6- In 1894, a French educator Baron Pierre de Coubertin, revived the ancient tradition, and thus the modern-day Olympic Summer Games
were born.
7-The first modern Olympic Games were held in France.
8-Greece won the most medals (47) at the first Olympic Summer Games.
9-Norway has won the most medals (263) at the Summer Games.
10-The United States has won more medals (2,189) at the Winter Games.
11-The five Olympic rings represent the five major regions of the world – Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe and Oceania.
12-Every national flag in the world includes one of the five colors in the rings, which are (from right to left ) blue, yellow, black, green, and red.
13-No country in the Southern Hemisphere has ever hosted a Winter Games.
14-Three continents – Africa, South America, and Antarctica – have never hosted an Olympics.
15- A record 202 countries participated in the 2008 Olympic Summer Games in Athens .
